Are you sick and tired of changing your Friendster layout into the “prettiest layout ever” and then discovering next week that one of your friends has that very same layout in their profile? What about seeing a poem you copied into your profile in another person’s profile? That’s not uncommon: there are lots of people who copy down quotes, sayings, poems or other forms of literature that they find funny, entertaining, cute, or the like. The same goes for graphics and pictures. And the main reason why Friendster layout sites were created because, yep, they actually want people to copy down the layouts that were submitted by other people. Even though it isn’t wrong, it kills off originality from Friendster profiles. There might come a day that when you log in into your Friendster, you’ll suddenly realize that every profile is a spliced-together carbon copy of other profiles.

So, how can you stop that from happening to your profile? Simple: make your own. Do it yourself. Don’t just rely on sites to give you content to paste in your profile; most of the things in your profile should be written by you, original; that’s why profiles were created, so that an individual could express his personality and originality in his profile. Write your own stuff, and if possible keep quoting to a minimum.

Then, consider making your own layout so that it’ll stand out from the others. The first thing to do would be to look at other layouts. What qualities would you like to have in your own layout? What would you like to avoid? Will you, and where, if you would, put your watermark? What will make it look unique? Making a sketch of what you want on scratch paper helps, too.

Now, since you’ve visualized what you want, try tinkering in Photoshop and see how you can achieve that look. You can try several styles, several ways of doing things, and even ask your friends for opinions, but in the end the last word is always up to you, since it’s your layout that you’re making. You can even use other programs like Macromedia flash to achieve your desired effect. You can then upload it to any site to prepare for the next part.

Next comes the hardest part: coding. You can try a hand at learning CSS for Friendster, but if you feel that it’ll take too much time, try employing the help of other programs such as Adobe ImageReady or plug-ins such as Site Grinder 2 Pro to generate codes for you. (I haven’t used SiteGrinder before, but I’m told that it’s much easier to use than ImageReady.) Try to have patience as most people don’t get the hang of it on their first try.

The last part is linking your codes into your profile if you want an external CSS, javascript, or overlay layout, or paste it into Friendster’s supplied CSS box if you want an internal CSS layout. Then preview your profile and see if the layout works. External layouts may take a little more time to take effect, but they will if you’ve put them in the right place. And there you have it, your very own customized Friendster profile.
